Ernesto Yerena
Ernesto Yerena is an artist and Chicano activist that creates works of art with very heavy messages behind them. Messages of self motivation and desire are just two that are touched upon within his GANAS series of art work, GANAS is his message that expresses the very will to excel and move forward in mental growth for himself and growth for the society around him. Latismo visited Ernesto Yerena at his Echo Park studio in California for a close up look at what goes into creating his unique works of art. We were welcomed into his studio and realized soon after that we would leave with way more then a story about an artist, we would leave with a mindset that change in society is not only wanted, but it is a must. We spent hours talking with Ernesto about society and politics, which seem to be two subjects he is very well versed in. Ernesto has a mind of a well-educated and very well spoken Chicano that could be mistaken for military if you did not know him. I say Military because he has very calculated ideas of were society may be headed if things are not done to fix the wrongs of some of the injustice that faces the Chicano community of today.
As an apprentice to the famous artist Shepard Fairey for a few years Ernesto Yerena helped to create some of the most popular art of today. Having moved on to his solo career creating works of art with his own name on them has proven to be a blessing for not only him as an artist, but for art enthusiast around the world. You can rest assured that when you own a piece of Ernesto Yerena art you in fact own something with an enormous amount of effort and thought put behind it. No two pieces will ever be the same and neither will we at Latismo.
