Daybreakers

Vampires are the new "What I want to be when I grow up!" 2009 has kicked off the vampire craze with Twilight and now 2010 begins with the film Daybreakers. When I heard William Dafoe and Ethan Hawk were staring in this movie I was all for running to the ticket booth on opening night. I could not wait to see the teeth and blood. Now I know I have braces but you better believe I would trade those in for a pair of fangs any day!
I immediately connected with the film when I saw how they portrayed a vampires life exactly like our lives but a twist to it. The vampires movements and every day life was so unique but yet realistic. I rate the gore in this film a straight TEN! Blood is just every where and the feedings are so gruesome but I loved. Vampire movies must have that blood element to really be a vampire movie, at least I think so. The gore, actors and plot sold this film as an actual prediction of what could be in the future.
Ethan Hawke stars as a vampire on a mission, not only in this film does he complete this mission but in his film career period. At the age of fourteen Hawke had his first film debut in 1985's Explorers. Followed by 1991's White Fang, 1994 White Fang 2, Great Expectations 1998, The Newton Boys 1998, Snow Falling On Cedars 1999. 2001 Training day was awesome! Hawkes powerful costar Denzel Washington pushed Hawke to a character I would never think he could play. Hawke nailed the role and Training Day had you on the edge of your seat. Another favorite role is 2004 Taking Lives co staring with Angelina Jolie. Hawke's character is so sweet and twisted giving you chills when you find out the truth. Hawke does not disappoint with his role in Daybreakers.
William Dafoe is another great actor I love to follow. Dafoe chooses his roles so carefully and each is different and even more complex as the one before. Beginning his career with Platoon 1986, Mississippi Burning 1988, The Last Temptation of Christ 1988, Born on the fourth of July 1989, The English Patient 1996, and lets not for get Spider man 2001 and my favorite Boondocks Saints. Dafoe was so vibrant and strong playing the lead detective making the crime scenes an elegant story. This movie was so jaw dropping but his character alone brought the movie to greater heights.
As Daybreakers began to come to the ending, I have to say I was a bit disappointed. With a phenomenal cast and excellent concept I felt the ending could have gone out with a bit more of a bang. I was confused on how the ending was and how it tied into the whole movie. Still get your tickets and get ready for the gore and you be the judge and tell me if your little vampire hearts are fulfilled! Remember you can be whatever you want to be when you grow up..even a vampire :)
